SUMMARY:Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in SW Oregon's Streams & Lakes
DESCRIPTION:  \nRogue Drinking Water Partnership\n\nHarmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in SW Oregon’s Streams & Lakes\n  \nHarmful Algal Blooms (HABs) harm the health of fish\, other aquatic wildlife\, pets\, humans\, and a community’s economy. HABs in bodies of freshwater are often associated with warm temperatures and higher nutrient concentrations – a recipe made for Southwest Oregon summers! \nPlease join us for fascinating presentations about the many aspects of HABs\, from the science of cyanobacteria to the best management practices for limiting their occurrence. \nThe presentations will cover cyanobacteria science and ecology\, public health concerns\, monitoring\, best management and control practices\, current rules & recommendations\, water treatment options\, recent EPA resources\, and details about a free toxin-testing program. \nCasey Lyon is the technical services unit manager for Oregon Health Authority Drinking Water Services Region 2\, which covers the southern half of Oregon. Casey has been working on HABs and drinking water for 10 years and has developed many proactive approaches to protect Oregon’s drinking water from cyanotoxins. Jake Kann is the owner of Acquatic Ecosystem Sciences\, LLC in Ashland and will be presenting on HABs in the local lakes and reservoirs. \nLunch is provided\, please RSVP by March 15 \nFor more information contact: Sarah Sauter\, (541) 423-6184\, ssauter@rogueriverwc.org \n

For more information on this property go to Conserve the Heart of the Rogue. \nLimit: 15 \nMeeting Location: Rogue River Preserve \nDifficulty: Slow-paced walking on generally flat ground on roads\, trails and off-trail. Weed seeds and ticks may be present so long pants are advised. \nRegister here\, directions will be emailed upon registration. SUMMARY:Spring RBP Member/Partner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Spring Member/Partner Meeting\nMarch 20th 3-5:30pm; Taprock Northwest Grill\nPresentation to begin ~3:15PM; hang out 4 – 5:30PM\nsnacks provided\, beverages for purchase\n\nGet to know the oldest and most misunderstood fishes in North America – lampreys. We’ll explore the biology\, diversity\, and conservation of these fascinating ancient fishes. We’ll learn how lampreys start out as an eyelash-sized larva (ammocoete) and grow to the size of a pencil hidden in the stream bottom. How they filter the river’s water and mix the sediment like an earthworm. Then we’ll follow their journey\, riding the flood downriver and out to sea where they ride fishes and whales along the coast. How they sniff out a good river and work their way upstream\, climbing waterfalls along the way\, to build a nest\, spawn and die. We will also examine the conservation status of lampreys. How are they doing\, what are their challenges\, how do they fit into our activities on the land and in the water\, and what can we do to ensure their long-term survival? \n\nStewart Reid\, PhD\, is an ichthyologist and conservation biologist based in the Rogue Valley. He has been working on fishes since he was 13 and has been working on systematics\, ecology and conservation of lampreys for almost 20 years in the western North America from the Canadian border down into México. For the last 12 years he has been working as an independent biologist\, specializing in the biology of freshwater fishes in western North America – including all the really charismatic overlooked species and leaving salmonids to everyone else. His work includes collaboration with agencies\, tribes\, local communities and landowners to promote the stewardship of fishes and aquatic communities. \n\nStewart is looking for an interactive audience\, so come prepared!
