SUMMARY:CWMA Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next CWMA meeting is coming up next month on February 11 at the Medford Interagency Office at 3040 Biddle Road\, Medford\, OR 97504 from 9:30am to noon. This is a new location for our CWMA\, so please mark it on your calendars. The meeting will feature two guest presentations. First is Troy Abercrombie\, the new Western Invasives Network (WIN) Coordinator. Troy will talk to us about WIN and the Oregon Invasives Hotline. This is a great opportunity for us to learn more about the broader noxious weed work occurring throughout the state\, and share our trials and successes with WIN. Next we will transition to “Weeds to Watch For” with Carri Pirosko (ODA) and Kyle Strauss (Strauss Ecological Services). This presentation is perfect for those who are new to the noxious weed world or looking to become more aware as the 2020 field season approaches. \nThis year we are changing up the CWMA meeting schedule. The new meeting format is designed to expand our partnership and increase interest in local noxious weed management. Our CWMA meetings will be held quarterly\, alternating between Jackson and Josephine County. Each CWMA meeting will include a guest speaker\, tour\, and/or hand’s-on learning component. As always\, we will include time for networking and information sharing in every meeting. The CWMA meetings will also include updates from the working groups. The new working group structure\, which is modeled on other CWMAs\, provides a venue for folks to discuss specific weed management strategies and logistics in between the quarterly CWMA meetings. \nParticipating in the Jackson and Josephine County Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) partnership provides the best opportunity to educate ourselves and plug into local weed management efforts. Please help spread the word by sharing this meeting announcement with anyone you think is interested in (or should be) being involved. \nClick here to download the meeting agenda. \n

SUMMARY:Bryophyte and Lichen Snowshoe Walk with Scot Loring
DESCRIPTION:During winter\, we often forget that in the quiet and stillness\, the forest is still teeming with life. Join the Friends as we discover the often overlooked world of lichens and bryophytes in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Bryophytes will include mosses and liverworts\, as hornworts will likely be undetectable under the snow\, being generally terrestrial. Many species grow on trees\, some of which are typically found only higher up from the ground\, which may be accessible by snowshoeing on top of deep snowpack. \nScot Loring\, Friends board member and botanist/mycologist will teach us how to identify common species and will share his knowledge of their ecology and physiology. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2525947387673854/ \nThe hike location is to be determined\, based on the snowpack on the day of the event. Registered participants will be given information about the exact location once this has been determined. \nRegistration is required to attend this hike. \nHike Duration: 4 hours \nHike Length: 2-3 miles (exact length is TBD\, depending on location) \nDifficulty: Participants should be able to comfortably walk 2-3 miles in snow and spend a few hours in potentially cold weather. We will be going at a medium pace with periodic stops. Beginners and families welcome\, recommended for ages 10+ \nPlease Bring:\n– Sack lunch\n– Water bottle\n– Layers\n– Snow shoes or xc skis*\, or if there is no/little snow wear boots that can get muddy\, *snow shoes or xc skis may be rented from Get N Gear\, REI\, the SOU Outdoor Program\, or Mountain Provisions in Ashland\n– Additional items: Sunglasses\, Sunscreen\, Binoculars\, Hand Lens\n– A sense of adventure! \nDirections: To carpool\, meet at 8:45 am in the Rite Aid parking lot (corner of Ashland Street and Tolman Creek Road). Park at the east end\, near the Rodeway Inn. We will be leaving the parking lot at 9am.

SUMMARY:Upper Table Rock Post-Burn Planting Day
DESCRIPTION:The Bureau of Land Management has completed thinning and controlled burning treatments on the slopes of Upper Table rock. The next step in the process involves planting native grasses and wildflowers in the burn scars to aid in ecosystem recovery. \nJoin the Rogue Native Plant Partnership for a day of planting and help restore this beautiful fire-adapted landscape! \nWhen & Where: Meet  at 9 am on February 20th in the parking lot at the base of Upper Table rock. \nBring: Appropriate clothing for working outdoors\, a bag lunch/snacks\, water\, sun protection\, sturdy shoes and any other equipment you need to make walking in woods/planting easier. If you have preferred planting tools bring them but we will have a variety of hand tools available. \nMore info: We will be hiking up the trail to the mid & upper slopes then hiking off-trail to planting sites in the thinned and burned area. We will have a few hand carts or a UTV to haul material up the trail then we will carry plugs in bundles of 25 to the planting sites. Be prepared for ticks\, poison oak\, and rough ground off-trail. The treatments are designed to enhance and restore the natural oak woodlands and meadows and reduce the risk of severe fires. We will be planting 500 Elymus elymoides\, 350 Festuca californica and 260 Grindelia nana plugs.
